Novak Djokovic Withdraws from Cincinnati Masters

The Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Masters for “non-medical” reasons, which means he will arrive at the US Open without having played any official matches in approximately a month and a half.

The winner of 24 Grand Slam titles has not competed since his defeat in the Wimbledon semi-finals against Jannik Sinner on July 11.

That straight-sets defeat to Sinner at the All England Club came two days after Djokovic, 38, suffered a fall he described as “unpleasant” and “strange” in the final game of his quarter-final victory. Djokovic was clearly affected against Sinner and was unable to move at his best, receiving treatment on his upper left leg from a trainer.

Djokovic’s withdrawal from Cincinnati adds to his decision not to participate in the Toronto Masters, which concludes this week. He cited a groin injury to justify his absence.

His previous event before Wimbledon was the French Open, where he also lost to Sinner in the semi-finals.

Djokovic will have no hard court preparation before the individual competition of the US Open begins on August 24.

He has won four championships at Flushing Meadows, the most recent in 2023. That was also his most recent Grand Slam trophy.
