Djokovic Withdraws from Cincinnati Open

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic withdrew from the Cincinnati Open this Monday, citing a “non-medical” reason. This decision means that the 24-time Grand Slam champion will arrive at the US Open without having played a match in approximately a month and a half. Djokovic has not competed since his defeat in the Wimbledon semi-finals against Jannik Sinner, who eventually became champion, on July 11th. The straight-sets defeat against Sinner at the All England Club came two days after Djokovic, 38, suffered a fall he described as “unpleasant” and “uncomfortable” in the final game of his quarter-final victory. Djokovic was clearly affected against Sinner and was unable to move at his best, receiving treatment on his upper left leg from a trainer. Djokovic’s withdrawal from Cincinnati follows his decision not to participate in the Toronto Masters, which concludes this week. At that time, he cited a groin injury as the reason for his absence. His previous event before Wimbledon was the French Open, where he also lost to Sinner in the semi-finals. Djokovic will have no preparation in hard court tournaments before the US Open men’s singles competition begins on August 24. He has won four championships at Flushing Meadows, the most recent in 2023. That was also his most recent Grand Slam trophy.
