Djokovic Advances to Semifinals in Shanghai after Defeating Bergs

SHANGHAI – Novak Djokovic secured his place in the Shanghai Masters semifinals after defeating Zizou Bergs with a score of 6-3, 7-5. The Serbian tennis player will face qualifier number 204, Valentin Vacherot, from Monaco in the next round. Djokovic, known for his prowess on the court, has had to contend with the demanding heat and humidity conditions in Shanghai. In previous matches, he has experienced physical difficulties, including episodes of vomiting and the need for medical attention. In his match against Bergs, the only notable setback was a break when he was leading 5-4 in the second set, before securing the victory.

I should have closed out the match at 5-4. The conditions are very challenging for all the players, and I was just trying to stay on the court. I’m glad to overcome this obstacle.

Novak Djokovic
This was the first match between Djokovic and Bergs. At the end of the match, Bergs, visibly emotional, expressed his admiration for Djokovic before embracing him at the net. In a surprising turn, Vacherot managed to defeat the number 10 seed, Holger Rune, with a score of 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. This result makes him the second lowest-ranked semifinalist in Masters 1000 events in the last 35 years, according to the ATP.

This is simply incredible. I didn’t come as a qualifier, I came as an alternate. I wasn’t even sure I was going to play the qualifying.

Valentin Vacherot
Vacherot sealed his victory when Rune missed a serve, falling to his knees on the court, visibly affected by leg cramps during the third set.
