Djokovic Advances to Semifinals in Shanghai

Novak Djokovic achieved a solid victory at the Shanghai Masters, defeating Zizou Bergs with a score of 6-3, 7-5. This triumph secures him a place in the semifinals, where he will face the number 204 ranked player, Valentin Vacherot, from Monaco. Djokovic, known for his outstanding career, has had to deal with the demanding climatic conditions of Shanghai. In previous matches, he has experienced physical difficulties, including episodes of vomiting and the need for medical assistance. Despite these setbacks, the Serbian tennis player demonstrated his resilience and determination on the court. The match against Bergs presented a moment of tension when Djokovic was broken while leading 5-4 in the second set. However, he managed to recover and convert his third match point.

I should have closed the match at 5-4. The conditions are very difficult for all the players, and I was just trying to stay alive on the court. I’m glad I overcame this obstacle.

Novak Djokovic
This match marked the first encounter between Djokovic and Bergs. At the end of the match, Bergs expressed his admiration for Djokovic with a smile. In another exciting match, Vacherot surprised the tenth seed, Holger Rune, with a score of 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. This result makes Vacherot the second lowest-ranked semifinalist in Masters 1000 events in the last 35 years, according to ATP data.

This is simply incredible. I didn’t come as a qualifier, I came as an alternate. I wasn’t even sure I was going to play the qualifying.

Valentin Vacherot
Vacherot sealed his victory when Rune missed a serve, which led the player to fall to his knees on the court, visibly emotional.
