Djokovic Comeback and Advances to Quarterfinals at Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic overcame a shaky start to avoid his earliest Wimbledon exit since 2016, securing a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over eleventh-seeded Alex De Minaur in the fourth round on Monday. Djokovic, seven-time Wimbledon champion, advanced to his 63rd Grand Slam tournament quarterfinal. However, the start of the match was not favorable for the 38-year-old tennis player. Lost the first set in 31 minutes, unusual for him at Wimbledon. Djokovic managed to turn the match around, mentioning that he “rebooted” in the second set, considering the end of it as a turning point. His performance improved noticeably at the end of the fourth set, after being down 4-1. He saved a break point to avoid 5-1, winning the last five games and 14 of the last 15 points.

I’m still trying to process the whole match and what happened in the fourth set. It wasn’t a great start for me, but it was for him. He was playing better… Honestly, I didn’t have many solutions.

A lot of cat and mouse game, a lot of cut shots. It’s extremely difficult to play against someone like him if you’re not feeling the ball well.

Djokovic, due to his age, is the third oldest man in the Open Era to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, after Roger Federer in 2021 and Ken Rosewall in 1974. Federer, eight-time champion at the All England Club, watched Djokovic’s match from the royal box.

It’s probably the first time you’ve seen me win the match. It’s good to break the curse.

Djokovic will continue his quest for his eighth Wimbledon title and his 25th Grand Slam singles trophy against Italy’s Flavio Cobolli, ranked number 22. Cobolli reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3) victory over Marin Cilic, 2014 US Open champion and two-time major runner-up.
