In a match played on Wednesday, Novak Djokovic demonstrated his experience and skill by defeating Zachary Svajda with scores of 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3 and 6-1. With this victory, Djokovic maintains his undefeated record in the first two rounds of the US Open. Djokovic, who played the first match of the day session at Arthur Ashe Stadium for the first time since 2014, improved his record to 54-45 in Grand Slam matches after losing the first set. This achievement positions him as the player with the most wins of this type in the Open era (since 1968). In the early stages of the match, Djokovic seemed to face physical difficulties, a situation he also experienced in his first-round victory. However, after going down 3-1 in the third set, the Serbian tennis player began to display his characteristic game, demonstrating why he has won 24 Grand Slam titles, a record in men’s tennis. The seventh seed, Djokovic, strung together eight consecutive games against the American tennis player, reaching a 3-0 lead in the fourth set, and finally closed out the match in just 26 minutes, after the first set lasted an hour.

I wasn’t very happy with my tennis in the first part of the match.

Djokovic also acknowledged the effort of his opponent, who was visibly struggling with an injury during the final part of the match. Svajda, who had won 17 of his last 19 matches across all categories, including the qualifying phase, requested medical assistance on several occasions and appeared to be suffering from cramps.

My congratulations to him for staying on the court.

This victory represents Djokovic’s 191st win in Grand Slam matches on hard court, tying Roger Federer for second place on the historical list, only behind Serena Williams, who has 200 wins. At 38 years old, Djokovic has reached the third round in his 19 appearances in New York, equaling Federer as the player with the most presences at this stage in the Open era. In his next match, Djokovic will face Cameron Norrie, whom he has defeated six times, or Francisco Comesana, against whom he has not yet played. In another match on Wednesday, Jiri Lehecka, number 20, defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry with a score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-2, and 6-4.
