Grigor Dimitrov Withdraws from US Open Due to Injury
Bulgarian tennis player Grigor Dimitrov, recognized for reaching the Grand Slam semi-finals on three occasions, has withdrawn from the US Open this Tuesday. The decision comes just over a month after suffering a chest muscle injury, which forced him to abandon his match against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon.
Dimitrov’s exit from the All England Club on July 7, where he had won the first two sets before getting injured in the third, marked his fifth consecutive Grand Slam tournament in which he failed to complete a match. This situation also occurred at the Australian Open in January and at Roland Garros in May, in addition to Wimbledon and the US Open last year.
In the previous edition of the US Open, Dimitrov retired in the quarterfinals, losing 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1 against Frances Tiafoe.
Dimitrov reached the semi-finals of the US Open in 2019, the Australian Open in 2017 and Wimbledon in 2014.
His best ranking position was number 3, and he is currently ranked number 21.
With Dimitrov’s withdrawal, Alejandro Tabilo gets a place in the men’s singles draw, which will begin on August 24.
Brandon Holt is the next player on the list who could enter the tournament if another tennis player withdraws. Holt surprised Taylor Fritz at Flushing Meadows in 2022 and is the son of two-time US Open champion Tracy Austin.
