Dabrowski and Routliffe Conquer US Open in Women’s Doubles

In an exciting final held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe won the US Open women’s doubles title, defeating the number one pair, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova.

With an outstanding performance, Dabrowski and Routliffe, who were seeded third, defeated Townsend and Siniakova with a score of 6-4, 6-4. This victory marks the second time in three years that the duo has taken the coveted title.

Victory holds a special meaning for Dabrowski, as it represents her first major achievement after undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The tennis player even postponed part of her treatment to be able to compete at Wimbledon last year, where she and Routliffe reached the final.

Townsend and Siniakova were looking to add the US Open title to their impressive record, having won Wimbledon last year and the Australian Open in January. Townsend, for her part, became a prominent figure in the tournament, although she was also involved in an incident after a singles match.

The American tennis player recounted an altercation with her opponent Jelena Ostapenko, who allegedly told her she had no “class” or “education”, comments that sparked debate about possible racial connotations. Townsend, 29, downplayed the issue, acknowledging that this perception of a lack of education has been a stigma in her community, although it is far from the truth.

Despite this incident, Townsend managed to reach the fourth round in singles, where she was defeated by Barbora Krejcikova. In doubles, Townsend and Siniakova reached the final of a Grand Slam for the fifth time, eliminating Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez on the way, who generated great expectation in the tournament.

Dabrowski, 33, from Canada, and Routliffe, 30, from New Zealand, shared a prize of $1 million, the same amount received by the winners of the men’s final, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.
