Coleman Wong Makes History at the US Open
The tennis player Coleman Wong, at just 21 years old, has achieved a historic milestone at the US Open. His victory in the first round not only represents a personal achievement, but also a transcendental moment for Hong Kong tennis. Wong became the first male player from Hong Kong to win a singles match at a Grand Slam tournament since the start of the Open era in 1968. The emotion and significance of this triumph were evident in his statements.Wong defeated the American Aleksandar Kovacevic in straight sets with scores of 6-4, 7-5 and 7-6 (4). After overcoming the qualifying rounds at the US Open, the Australian Open and twice at Wimbledon and Roland Garros, Wong was looking to enjoy this moment to the fullest, so much so that he hadn’t even checked a text message from his idol, Rafael Nadal. Wong’s relationship with Nadal goes beyond admiration. Wong’s family moved to Spain so that he could train at the Rafa Nadal Academy, a key springboard in his career. There, he forged important friendships, including that of Alexandra Eala. Eala, representing the Philippines, also made history at the US Open, becoming the first woman from her country to win a Grand Slam match. Wong witnessed this achievement and Eala was present at Wong’s victory, celebrating this moment together. It’s a great moment for me and also for my family, for the people of Hong Kong here and at home. It means a lot.

Wong and Eala are examples of players from less recognized countries in tennis who are shining at the US Open. Renata Zarazúa, the only representative of Mexico, achieved a victory against Madison Keys, while Janice Tjen achieved the first singles victory for Indonesia in a Grand Slam tournament in 22 years. Wong, currently ranked 173rd in the ATP rankings, had already drawn attention by defeating Ben Shelton in March in Miami. His next challenge at the US Open will be Adam Walton. We celebrate together. Alex and I are doing things that no one has done before. We are very happy for each other.

This tournament is a tennis player’s dream. A tennis player wants to perform on a stage like this. This is where I want to be. I thought about this many times when I was young, watching Rafa battle. I just want to keep going and see what I can do here.
