The American tennis player Coco Gauff, seeded number three, demonstrated her class and power by defeating Kamilla Rakhimova in the first round of the Australian Open with a score of 6-2, 6-3. Despite some problems with her serve, Gauff managed to prevail in the match. Gauff, who has conquered two Grand Slam titles, seeks to surpass her best performance at Melbourne Park, where she has not managed to advance beyond the semifinals. In the previous edition, she was eliminated in the quarterfinals. One of the recurring challenges for the player has been the number of double faults. In 2025, she recorded 431 on the WTA circuit, far surpassing her competitors. In the match against Rakhimova, she committed six in the first set, but only one in the second.

It was only the first set. I only had a double in the second. I think we were both struggling on the side. The sun is right there, which I know whenever I play first here during the day, that’s how it is.

Gauff, 21 years old, has been working on her serve for several months and took advantage of a break in the match to practice at Rod Laver Arena. In the next round, she will face Olga Danilovic. Danilovic, also 24 years old, defeated Venus Williams in the first round, eliminating the possibility of a match between the Americans.

There aren’t many [left-handed players] on the circuit, but Olga is a great player. She has beaten some of the best players, so it will be a tough match.

In other notable matches, Amanda Anisimova, Jessica Pegula, and Clara Tauson advanced to the next round. Anisimova defeated Simona Waltert with a score of 6-3, 6-2, Pegula overcame Anastasia Zakharova 6-2, 6-1, and Tauson prevailed over Dalma Galfi 6-3, 6-3. Sofia Kenin, for her part, continues her negative streak at the Australian Open, after losing to Peyton Stearns with a score of 6-3, 6-2. Stearns hit 15 aces and only one double fault, securing her place in the second round in one hour and 14 minutes. Her next challenge will be against Petra Marcinko. Priscilla Hon also secured her place in the second round of the tournament, while her opponent, Marina Stakusic, had to leave the court in a wheelchair due to leg cramps.
