Italy Advances to Davis Cup Semifinals After Defeating Austria
In a dominant demonstration, Italy, the reigning two-time champion, secured its place in the Davis Cup semi-finals by defeating Austria with a score of 2-0. The match took place in Bologna, where Flavio Cobolli was the main figure.
Cobolli defeated Filip Misolic with a score of 6-1, 6-3. The Italian tennis player sealed his victory with a powerful winning serve, after 65 minutes of play, unleashing joy among the local audience.
Previously, Matteo Berrettini also contributed to the Italian triumph by defeating Jurij Rodionov with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (4). Berrettini came back from a disadvantage in the second set, which led him to break serve in the ninth game. In addition, he saved three set points against his opponent, who was ranked 177th, and finally prevailed in the tiebreak.
The semi-final is scheduled for Friday. Italy has maintained an impressive streak, accumulating 12 consecutive Davis Cup victories since their last defeat in the final group stage in 2023.
Because the matches are played best-of-three, the doubles match was not played.
Italy, currently ranked number one, is looking for its third consecutive title and the fourth overall.
It is worth noting that Jannik Sinner, who led Italy to victory in 2023 and 2024, decided not to participate in this season’s Davis Cup final.
Austria, ranked number 12, has only managed to beat Italy once in their six previous encounters, precisely in the 1990 quarter-finals in Vienna, their best result in this competition.
The final phase of the Davis Cup in Bologna represents the sixth edition of the renewed event, where the champion is defined in a neutral venue.
Carlos Alcaraz, world number one and winner of six Grand Slam titles, withdrew due to a hamstring injury.
Spain will face the Czech Republic, while Germany will play against Argentina in the last two quarter-finals on Thursday.
