ATP Increases Prize Money in Masters 1000 Tournaments
The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) announced a significant increase in prize money for players, based on their performances in the nine Masters 1000 tournaments last year. This increase is due to the profit-sharing plan implemented in 2022.
The additional sum amounts to $18.3 million, exceeding the $6.6 million distributed in 2023.
With this increase, the total compensation for ATP players in 2024 reaches a record figure of $261 million.
The expanded Masters tournaments, which now include joint events for men and women, larger draw sizes, and more extensive schedules, have drawn criticism from some players due to their duration.
This announcement comes in a context of demands from some athletes seeking higher incomes and greater influence in the sport.
The Professional Tennis Players Association, co-founded by Novak Djokovic, filed a class-action antitrust lawsuit in March against the ATP, WTA, International Tennis Federation, and International Tennis Integrity Agency, accusing them of forming a “cartel”.
