Amanda Anisimova Shocks Iga Swiatek in US Open Quarterfinals
In a day full of emotions at the US Open, Amanda Anisimova achieved an impressive victory over Iga Swiatek, with a score of 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. This victory is even more significant if we consider that less than two months ago, Swiatek had defeated Anisimova in the Wimbledon final with a resounding 6-0, 6-0. Anisimova, 24 years old and eighth seed, born in New Jersey and raised in Florida, reached her third Grand Slam tournament semifinal and her first at Flushing Meadows. The tennis player demonstrated a powerful game and great composure on the Arthur Ashe court against Swiatek, the 2022 US Open champion. This performance contrasted notably with what happened at the All England Club on July 12th. In that final, Anisimova only managed to win 24 points, a figure she surpassed halfway through the first set in this match. After the defeat at Wimbledon, Anisimova had expressed her sadness during the trophy presentation ceremony. After defeating Aryna Sabalenka, number one in the world, in the Wimbledon semi-finals, Anisimova becomes the first American woman to defeat two Top-2 WTA players in consecutive Grand Slam tournaments since Serena Williams achieved it at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2012.I’ve been having the best time of my life here. Coming back from Wimbledon like that is really special for me. I feel like I worked really hard to try and change that, and today proved it all to me.
Amanda Anisimova
Anisimova’s first two Grand Slam semi-finals were at the French Open and Wimbledon in 2019; she is the youngest woman to reach a major semi-final on all three surfaces since Simona Halep at the 2015 US Open.
Anisimova will seek to reach her second consecutive final of a major tournament. She will face Naomi Osaka or Karolina Muchova in the semifinals.
