Amanda Anisimova surprises and advances in the US Open

In an emotional day at the US Open, Amanda Anisimova starred in an outstanding performance by defeating Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals with a score of 6-4, 6-3. This victory comes after the defeat suffered by Anisimova against the same rival in the Wimbledon final, where Swiatek won with a resounding 6-0, 6-0. This victory marks Anisimova’s third Grand Slam semi-final, and her first at Flushing Meadows. The tennis player, born in New Jersey and raised in Florida, expressed her excitement after the match.

“Coming back from Wimbledon like this is really special for me. I feel like I worked really hard to try and turn the situation around… Today is really special.”

Anisimova’s game, characterized by powerful strokes and great composure on the Arthur Ashe court, contrasted sharply with what happened at the All England Club in July. In that final, Anisimova only managed to win 24 points in 57 minutes, a figure that she surpassed halfway through the first set in this match.

Swiatek acknowledged her rival’s good performance.

“Everyone knows how Amanda can play. Yes, she didn’t play well at Wimbledon, but it’s not like she’s always going to make the same mistakes or feel the same.”

In the semifinal, Anisimova will face Naomi Osaka, who previously eliminated Coco Gauff. Anisimova will seek her second consecutive final in a Grand Slam. Despite starting the match with a break against her, Anisimova reacted immediately, imposing her game with powerful shots that allowed her to score 23 winners, surpassing Swiatek by ten. In addition, she made few unforced errors, only 12. Swiatek acknowledged Anisimova’s superiority in this match.

“She moved better, played better. Everything was different.”

Swiatek’s service was not effective, with only 50% first serves and four breaks. Anisimova took advantage of the situation to take the lead. In the second set, Anisimova came back again after being down 2-0, showing great determination. Swiatek, visibly frustrated, couldn’t keep up the pace and Anisimova secured the victory when Swiatek double-faulted, leaving the score 5-3 in favor of Anisimova. Anisimova highlighted the difficulty of facing Swiatek.

“From the start, I tried to encourage myself. She is one of the toughest players I have played against. I knew I would have to give my all.”

Anisimova, after defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the Wimbledon semi-finals, becomes the first American to defeat two WTA top 2 players in consecutive Grand Slam tournaments since Serena Williams in 2012. Having just turned 24, Anisimova is also the youngest player to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam on all three surfaces since Simona Halep at the 2015 US Open.
