Andy Murray’s Historic Racket Fetches a Surprising Price at Auction

A racket used by Andy Murray during his victory in the men’s Wimbledon final in 2013 recently sold for $73,200 (including buyer’s premium) at a Goldin Auctions auction. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the British tennis player’s career. This sale represents the highest price paid for an Andy Murray item at auction. The victory of Murray in 2013 was historic, as it was the first time in 76 years that a British man had won at Wimbledon. Since the First World War, Murray, who won again in 2016, and Fred Perry, winner in 1934, 1935 and 1936, are the only British men who have achieved this feat. In the women’s division, a British woman has not won Wimbledon since Virginia Wade in 1977.

The auction lot included a letter of authenticity from Resolution Photomatching, which certifies the “conclusive” match of the racket with its use in the Wimbledon final, as well as in Murray’s second round and semi-final matches. The letter also indicates that the racket was used in a match on June 26, before the tournament.

The auction for Murray’s racket was highly contested, with 49 bids from its opening on August 29th until its conclusion. The record price paid for a tennis racket belongs to a Babolat racket that Rafael Nadal used during his winning final of the 2017 French Open. The racket sold for more than $157,000 in June.
