The 2025 Tennis Season: An Unforgettable Year

The 2025 professional tennis season has come to an end, and without a doubt, it has been a year to remember. From the dominance of stars like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Aryna Sabalenka, to the breakthrough of players like Amanda Anisimova and Ben Shelton, and the triumphant return of Naomi Osaka, this season offered excitement for everyone. Alcaraz and Sinner dominated the ATP circuit, sharing the four Grand Slam titles. However, in the WTA women’s circuit, the competition was more fierce, with four different players, Madison Keys, Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek and Sabalenka, taking the Grand Slam titles. Throughout the year, both in the ATP and WTA, there were surprises and exciting stories that made this season truly memorable. Alofoke Deportes presents an analysis of the players who deserve the highest honors this year.

ATP Player of the Year: Carlos Alcaraz

The 2025 ATP season was marked by the rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner. Although both stood out from the rest, with a considerable point difference between Sinner and Alexander Zverev, the competition between them was fierce. Alcaraz won the French Open and the US Open, finishing the year as number 1 for the second time in his career. Sinner, for his part, won the Australian Open and Wimbledon, in addition to winning the ATP Finals for the second consecutive season.

Although the decision was difficult, Alcaraz received a slight advantage for winning six additional titles, including three Masters 1000. Furthermore, Alcaraz defeated Sinner in four of their six encounters in 2025.

It doesn’t matter if you think Alcaraz or Sinner deserve this distinction, one thing is for sure: they are the best players in the world and should continue their collective brilliance in 2026.

Sabalenka won the US Open for the second consecutive year.

WTA Player of the Year: Aryna Sabalenka

Although the competition was closer on the women’s circuit, Sabalenka stood out from the rest. The world number 1 maintained her position throughout the season, winning the US Open and repeating as champion, something that hadn’t happened since Serena Williams. She also reached the finals of the Australian Open and French Open, and the semi-finals of Wimbledon. In addition, she won three more titles, including two at the 1000 level, and participated in a total of nine finals.

She is the clear player of the year.

Revelation Moment: Madison Keys, Australian Open

After a promising career, Keys achieved her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, defeating five seeded players, including Swiatek and Sabalenka. After almost 16 years as a professional, Keys finally achieved her greatest accomplishment.

Match of the Year: Alcaraz vs. Sinner, French Open Final

The first Grand Slam final between these two rivals lasted five hours and 29 minutes, becoming the longest French Open final and the second-longest in a Grand Slam. Alcaraz came back from a losing score and won in a fifth-set tiebreak. This match consolidated the legend of the “Big Two” and the rivalry that promises to define tennis for years to come.

Most Improbable Victory: Valentin Vacherot, Shanghai

Vacherot, ranked 204th in the world, arrived at the Masters 1000 event as an alternate for the qualifying phase. However, he managed to get in and, surprisingly, defeated several seeded players, including Holger Rune and Novak Djokovic, before facing his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in the final. Vacherot won the title, becoming the first Monegasque player to win an ATP title and the Masters champion with the lowest ranking in history.

Honorable Mention: Victoria Mboko, Canadian Open

Mboko, ranked 85th in the world, received a wildcard and surprised by defeating four Grand Slam champions, winning the 1000-level tournament in her country. This was her first WTA title, and her ranking rose to 24th.

Star Performance of the Year: Taylor Townsend, US Open

Townsend, known for her talent in singles and doubles, captivated the world with her game and composure at the US Open. After a victory over Jelena Ostapenko, Townsend faced a confrontation. Townsend remained calm and defeated Mirra Andreeva, solidifying her status as a fan favorite.

Year’s Doubles Teams: Glasspool/Cash and Siniakova/Townsend

Glasspool and Cash, the two best doubles players in the world, reached 11 finals in 2025, winning seven titles, including Wimbledon. Siniakova and Townsend continued their successful partnership, winning their second Grand Slam title together at the Australian Open.

Honorable Mention: Harrison/King

Harrison and King, without ATP titles before this season, won three ATP titles, reached the semifinals of the French Open, and qualified for the ATP Finals.

Comeback Player of the Year: Belinda Bencic

Bencic returned to competitive tennis in October 2024, six months after giving birth to her daughter. In 2025, she reached the fourth round at the Australian Open and won the Abu Dhabi Open. She finished the season with a semi-final appearance at Wimbledon and another title at the Japan Open.

Amanda Anisimova had a breakthrough year, reaching the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open.

Most Improved Player: Amanda Anisimova

Anisimova, after a mental health break, won the Qatar Open title and entered the top 20. She reached the final at Queen’s Club and surprised Sabalenka in the Wimbledon semi-finals, reaching her first Grand Slam final. After getting revenge at the US Open, Anisimova won another level 1000 title at the China Open and reached the semi-finals of the WTA Finals, reaching the number 4 spot in the world.

Honorable Mention: Learner Tien

Tien had an outstanding season, reaching the second round of the Australian Open after overcoming the qualifying rounds and defeating Daniil Medvedev. He also defeated Zverev at the Mexican Open, and won his first ATP title at the Moselle Open, finishing the year with a new ranking.

Most Challenging Players at Age: Novak Djokovic and Venus Williams

Djokovic, at 38 years old, remains the third-best player in the world, reaching the semi-finals of all four Grand Slams. He won two titles and has a total of 101 in his career.

Venus Williams, at 45 years old, returned to tennis at the Citi Open, becoming the oldest player to win a match at the tour level. She competed in the Cincinnati Open and the US Open, and joined Leylah Fernandez in doubles, reaching the quarterfinals. Williams has accepted a wildcard to play in Auckland in January, marking her 33rd year as a professional tennis player.
