Athletic Club defender Yeray Álvarez has been suspended for 10 months due to an unintentional doping violation.
Álvarez tested positive for canrenone after the Europa League match against Manchester United in May.
The player’s provisional suspension began on June 2, and disciplinary proceedings opened on June 10.
UEFA announced on Monday that its disciplinary body imposed a 10-month sanction on Álvarez on August 19, taking into account the time he was provisionally suspended.
The ban on playing extends until April 2 of next year. However, UEFA confirmed that the player will be able to train and use the club’s facilities from February 2.
In a social media post in July, Álvarez confirmed his provisional suspension, explaining that a hair loss medication contained a prohibited substance.
After studying the case, we have established that I tested positive because I unintentionally took a hair loss medication that contained a prohibited substance.

The player also added that the disciplinary procedure is currently under investigation and subject to confidentiality, so he is not authorized to make any further public statements.
Álvarez regretted the situation and stated that, with the club’s support, he is working on his defense with the hope of returning to the playing field as soon as possible.
