Weah Reiterates Criticism of Former Players and Focuses on the Future with the United States National Team

Marseille and US National Team forward Timothy Weah has reaffirmed his stance regarding criticism from former players turned analysts. Weah insists that he does not regret calling these critics “malicious” and firmly maintains his position. Weah’s statements came in an interview for the documentary series “Pulisic”, where he addressed the criticism directed at the current team and players like Christian Pulisic, who missed this summer’s Gold Cup due to exhaustion.

I think those guys are looking for checks, and for me I feel like they’re really evil,” Weah commented. “They were players and they know what it’s like to be criticized. They are the same ones who will turn around and shake your hand and try to be friendly with you at the end of the day. Don’t get me wrong, I respect them all. They were players I admired.

During a press conference, Weah was asked if he considered the word “evil” accurate and if he would use another word today, to which he replied: “I don’t regret anything I said.” This concentration marks Weah’s return to the national team since the Concacaf Nations League finals in March. He missed the Gold Cup due to commitments with his previous club, Juventus.

Weah is now setting his sights on the upcoming friendlies against South Korea and Japan. “I’m completely focused on the positive now,” Weah stated. “I’m putting all that negative energy aside. I think it’s important now to shift the focus to what we’re doing as a group, and what this team is doing, and how we can execute performances and take our game to the next level to be prepared for the World Cup.” Weah joined Marseille on loan from Juventus last month, although the transfer is expected to become permanent. His first months with the club, where his father George also played, have been turbulent. An altercation in the locker room between Adrien Rabiot and Jon Rowe made headlines, but Weah assures that he is enjoying his time there. “The club is everything to the city, everything to the fans,” Weah said about Marseille. “They eat, sleep, breathe football; they eat, sleep, breathe Marseille. So it’s something special when you play for a club like Marseille. You know what it means to them. It’s their heart and soul. So you have to give one hundred percent.” Weah also commented on his commitment to the national team. “I never thought about not coming to the training camp,” he said. “I think the national team is also a priority for me. So coming here, being with the group and building on what we already have, and refining many things for me is important because at the end of the day, the goal is nine months away. We have to perform and be at the top of our game. So any opportunity I have to come and build with these guys, I’m one hundred percent for it. So I’m always here.”
