Thomas Müller close to signing with Vancouver Whitecaps
Sources close to Alofoke Deportes reveal that the Vancouver Whitecaps are about to finalize the signing of Thomas Müller, star of Bayern Munich and the German national team.
To formalize the agreement with the world champion, the Canadian team needs to acquire the discovery rights of Müller, which grant MLS clubs the exclusivity to negotiate with players who do not belong to the league.
Currently, FC Cincinnati holds Müller’s discovery rights. However, the 35-year-old footballer rejected an offer to join the Eastern Conference team in April.
The Whitecaps are in the final stages of negotiation to obtain the discovery rights of Müller from Cincinnati. The deal could involve up to $400,000 in General Allocation Money.
According to reports, Müller is willing to join the Whitecaps, and acquiring his discovery rights is a crucial step in the process.
The possible transfer of Müller to the MLS comes after 17 seasons at Bayern Munich, where he scored 250 goals in 756 matches in all competitions and won 12 league titles. This summer, he participated in his last tournament with the German team, playing in the Club World Cup in the United States.
The Vancouver Whitecaps, who recently reached the final of the Concacaf Champions Cup, are preparing to receive Müller.
The Whitecaps qualified for the 2024 MLS playoffs after finishing the regular season in eighth place and defeating the Portland Timbers in the wildcard match, before being eliminated by LAFC in the first round.
