Uruguay, Colombia, and Paraguay Secure Their Spot in the 2026 World Cup
In an exciting day of the South American qualifiers, Uruguay, Colombia, and Paraguay secured their tickets to the 2026 World Cup. These teams join Argentina, Brazil, and Ecuador, who had already secured their qualification.
Uruguay and Colombia achieved resounding victories with 3-0 scorelines, while Paraguay secured their place with a goalless draw. The Peruvian national team, despite needing victories in the last two matchdays, was eliminated from the competition after their defeat against Uruguay.
In the Colombia match, James Rodríguez opened the scoring in the 31st minute. John Córdoba and Juan Fernando Quintero extended the lead in the second half, securing the victory over Bolivia.
Paraguay returns to the World Cup after a 16-year absence. Their last participation was in South Africa 2010, where they reached the quarter-finals.
Argentina, the current world champion, defeated Venezuela 3-0, with two goals from Lionel Messi, consolidating its position at the top of the South American qualifying table.
The next edition of the tournament will feature a record 48 teams and will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
A total of 43 teams will earn their place through continental qualifiers. Another two teams will secure their participation in the intercontinental playoffs, scheduled for March 2026.
