Tuchel Ruled Out Greenwood for the English National Team

England’s technical director, Thomas Tuchel, has made it clear that Marseille striker Mason Greenwood is not in his plans. Tuchel stated that he has not had contact with the player. Greenwood, 23, was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 due to allegations related to a young woman. The case was dismissed in February 2023.

After playing on loan at Getafe during the 2023-24 season, Greenwood joined Marseille permanently. The footballer, with only one appearance for the English national team, began the process to change his eligibility to Jamaica. Greenwood obtained a Jamaican passport, but he has not yet completed the necessary form for the association change, as he is not ready to commit to the Caribbean nation. This has frustrated Reggae Boyz coach Steve McClaren and has kept open the possibility of a return to England, but Tuchel has cooled any conversation about a possible return.

“I haven’t spoken to him yet,” the coach said. “I haven’t spoken to him or his entourage.” “I understood that he is trying to play for Jamaica, so we didn’t give him another opportunity. He wasn’t in the equation at this moment and he’s not in our thoughts for our team.” McClaren had hoped to include him in his squad for this month’s World Cup qualifying matches against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago.

“We got a passport and were hoping he would come to this camp,” McClaren said. “But in a conversation with his family, we found out that he is not going to commit at this moment to anyone.”

“He’s taking his time with it, so it’s a bit disappointing. We’ll probably have to be more patient, but we’ll keep in touch, we’ll keep pursuing it because I know from my conversations with Mason and his family that he loves Jamaica, respects Jamaica. He wants to focus on club football and not commit to an international team at the moment. We have to respect that as much as we’ve worked hard to have him here for these camps. So, who knows in the future.” Greenwood’s only appearance for England was in a Nations League match against Iceland in September 2020. The forward was sent home along with Phil Foden shortly after their debuts after infuriating the Football Association by breaching UEFA’s strict coronavirus bubble to meet with women at the team hotel. Greenwood was called up by Gareth Southgate in May 2021 for the provisional squad for Euro 2020, only for the player to withdraw to recover from an underlying injury. The United academy product scored 21 goals in Ligue 1 with Marseille last season and has scored one goal this season.
