The England selector, Thomas Tuchel, has expressed his understanding of the criticism directed at Jude Bellingham after the defeat against Senegal. The midfielder showed visible frustration during the match, a match that ended with an unexpected defeat for the English team. Bellingham vehemently protested a play that could have meant a tie, but was invalidated by a handball. Finally, England suffered a 3-1 defeat at the City Ground, their first loss to an African nation.
In an interview, Tuchel defended Bellingham, but acknowledged that some fans might be disappointed by his behavior. Tuchel added that Bellingham must channel his energy in a positive way, always seeking victory. He recognized the player’s passion as a strength, but also mentioned that it can sometimes intimidate, even his own teammates. The coach highlighted the importance of helping Bellingham control his emotions and use that energy effectively on the field. Bellingham has proven his worth in the English national team, including a bicycle kick goal against Slovakia that prevented England’s elimination from the Euro 2024. Tuchel emphasized the need to find the best version of Bellingham and for the fans to understand what he brings to the team. The coach mentioned that even his own mother can find his behavior “repulsive” at certain times.I think he has something special. He brings an edge, which we appreciate and which is necessary if we want to achieve great things. It needs to be channeled. The edge needs to be channeled towards the opponent, towards our goal and not to intimidate teammates, or to be too aggressive with teammates or referees.
