Tragedy in Algeria: Title Celebration Ends in Mourning
A sporting event that should have been a celebration turned into a tragedy in Algeria. Following the victory of MC Alger, which secured its second consecutive title in the top category of Algerian football, an accident in the stadium stands left a toll of fatalities and numerous injuries. According to reports from the Algerian Ministry of Health, three spectators lost their lives and more than 70 were injured after a fall from the upper stand of the stadium.The official statement also detailed that Ben Aknoun Hospital treated 27 injured, while Bab El Oued Hospital received 16. The President of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. The MC Alger club also spoke out about the incident, regretting the loss of a supporter.So far, the club has not issued comments on the other victims.“The Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 injured, while three deaths were recorded,” the Algerian Ministry of Health communicated in a statement issued via Facebook.
