Toronto FC has reached a mutual agreement to terminate the contracts of Italian internationals Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi, as announced by the MLS club on Tuesday. Both players arrived in the summer of 2022 with high expectations and significant contracts. Insigne, one of the highest-paid soccer players in MLS, with a guaranteed compensation of $15.44 million, and Bernardeschi, also with a considerable salary, failed to meet the expectations placed on them. The club used the two guaranteed contract buy options that each MLS team has per season to part ways with the pair who previously played for Juventus. Insigne, 34 years old, had a contract until June 2026 with an option for the rest of that year. Bernardeschi, 31 years old, had a contract until 2026 with a two-year option.
The club wants to thank Lorenzo for his efforts over the last three years. After several meaningful conversations, we are pleased to have found a solution that is acceptable to all parties involved. We wish Lorenzo all the best in the future.
