FC Twente of the Dutch Eredivisie has announced Erik ten Hag as their new coach. The coach, with experience in renowned clubs, will join the team on February 1st and will take over from Jan Streuer, who will retire next season. Ten Hag has signed a contract that extends until the summer of 2028. The former coach of Ajax, Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen returns to the Netherlands to lead the FC Twente project.

Ten Hag was fired as Leverkusen coach after only three games in September 2025, after taking over in May. His brief spell in Germany followed a two-year stint at Man United, where he won the FA Cup and the League Cup, but was sacked in 2024 after a poor run of results.

“I think it’s wonderful and special to return to FC Twente, where I have been a fan in Het Diekman since I was a child,” Ten Hag stated in a statement.

“My careers in football and as a coach started here. With my experience in youth development, team building and elite sports culture, I want to strengthen the technical base of FC Twente together with the Supervisory Board, management and staff, so that the club can sustainably realize its potential as a regional flagship.” FC Twente’s general manager, Dominique Scholten, highlighted Ten Hag’s “connection” with the club as a key factor in his appointment. “Erik has an incredible track record in football, and his bond with FC Twente has always been very strong,” said Scholten. “At FC Twente, he served as a youth coach, head of the academy and assistant coach, and subsequently as head coach and technical manager at renowned clubs, both nationally and internationally. We have been in regular contact for the past few months, and our conversations quickly revealed a strong ambition to further develop FC Twente.”
