Tottenham Hotspur player Mathys Tel has stated that he will not be defeated by the racist insults he suffered on social media. Tel, 20 years old, was targeted after missing a penalty in Tottenham’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in last week’s UEFA Super Cup. The club issued a statement expressing its “disgust” at the abuse.

The footballer added:

Racism has no place in our society. Every day is a learning curve and every day is a lesson. I know where I come from, where I started, and none of this will bring me down. With work and humility, respect reigns. Thank you all.
