Canada Suffers Defeat Against the United States: Stoney Questions the Team’s Performance
Canada’s women’s national team coach, Casey Stoney, called her team’s performance in the 3-0 defeat to the United States at Audi Field “inexcusable.”The United States scored all three goals through set plays: a free kick, a corner kick, and a throw-in. Jordyn Huitema, Canadian forward, described this aspect as “disappointing and uncharacteristic of us.” Stoney pointed out that the team failed to execute the game plan, mentioning the number of crosses into the area despite the plan calling for fewer. He also indicated that his team lacked commitment and desire, losing too many duels and failing to press. Sam Coffey opened the scoring for the Americans in the 17th minute. The United States added a second goal before halftime. Yazmeen Ryan scored the Americans’ third goal in the final minutes. The United States coach, Emma Hayes, commented that her veteran players “made sure we played how we wanted; we didn’t play another game”. Stoney questioned the physical condition levels of his players, and on several occasions stated that they would have to find better solutions in their clubs. Stoney also took responsibility for the result, and said that the defeat will force her to rethink her plans.“Talk is cheap,” Stoney stated. “We can keep talking about winning the World Cup, we can talk about the things we’re going to do. We can keep talking about what we’re going to do, or we can actually put things into action.”
