Tottenham Hotspur fans are hoping for a significant change following the departure of Daniel Levy, who left his position as executive chairman of the club. The decision, orchestrated by the Lewis family trust, which owns the club, seeks to improve the team’s performance on the field. Levy has been criticized by the fans, who believe that the club’s ambition off the field, such as the construction of a stadium and a world-class training center, has not translated into adequate investment in the team. The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust (THST) issued a statement urging the new club management to strengthen ties with the fans.

Daniel’s legacy is, evidently, the construction of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, widely recognized as one of the best football stadiums in the world, as well as related infrastructure, such as the training ground.

THST
The construction of a stadium of this magnitude in the urban heart of Tottenham was a significant achievement. Although some miss the more intimate atmosphere of White Hart Lane, the THS (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium) was necessary for Tottenham Hotspur to compete at the highest European level. Daniel’s vision and leadership in delivering the stadium are appreciated. However, the focus on the costs and profitability needed to complete the stadium did not benefit the club on the field. In the annual surveys, members and other respondents valued the club’s development off the field, but desired a greater focus on football. The victory in the Europa League was welcome, but it was the second trophy in Daniel’s 24-year tenure. The lack of progress under Mauricio Pochettino and after the inauguration of the THS was a missed opportunity, reflecting an approach, particularly in the transfer market, that was too cautious and focused on extracting monetary value rather than addressing the weaknesses evident to all. Genuine fan participation wasn’t something that came naturally to Daniel. Although there was a commitment on paper, in practice this often meant informing fans of the club’s plans with little notice. Greater involvement could have prevented errors such as the proposed move to Stratford, the European Super League, the furloughing of staff during the pandemic, and the reduction of season ticket concessions for season ticket holders.
Daniel Levy
Daniel’s departure represents a shift in leadership towards the interests of the Lewis family. This also provides the opportunity for more meaningful engagement with fans; there has already been an encouraging start under new CEO Vinai Venkatesham. The Trust will continue to play a constructive role in the engagement process and fulfill its function as a critical friend of the club. The club is currently in fourth position in the table after three matchdays in the new season. Their next match is against West Ham on September 13th.
