Cristian Romero Leaves the Field Injured in Tottenham Defeat
Tottenham defender Cristian Romero left the field in tears after suffering an injury during his team’s 1-0 defeat to Sunderland in the Premier League. The Argentinian international limped off after colliding with Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinsky in the second half of the match played at the Stadium of Light. The nature of the injury was not immediately determined, but Romero, 27, was unable to continue and showed obvious signs of distress as he went to the sidelines. Although he was able to leave the field without assistance and did not need a stretcher, his teammates consoled him as he walked away. Romero’s injury raises concerns for Argentina ahead of the World Cup, which begins in June, as he is a key player in coach Lionel Scaloni’s scheme. Kinsky was able to continue after being bandaged on the head. The defeat left Tottenham in the relegation zone, in 18th place, two points behind West Ham, who are in 17th place, with six games remaining in the season. Argentina will begin its participation in the World Cup in Group J on June 16 against Algeria at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. It’s very bad that Romero got injured, but I don’t know the severity of the injury. We have to see in the next few days. I hope it’s not a major problem for us because he is a crucial player. We need him to finish the season and achieve our goal.
Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham coach
