Roldan highlights the opportunity for US midfielders against Belgium and Portugal

United States midfielder Cristian Roldan has stated that the upcoming friendly matches against Belgium and Portugal represent a “great opportunity” for USMNT midfielders to prove their worth. This is especially relevant in the absence of his injured teammate, Tyler Adams. The American team is at its training camp in Marietta, Georgia, preparing for friendlies against Belgium on March 28 and Portugal three days later. The absence of Adams, who suffered a quadriceps injury with Bournemouth on March 13, is notable.

“I think Tyler’s absence leaves a big void,” Roldan commented in a call with the media. “Tyler brings a lot to our team: his energy, his ability to recover balls, cover ground, his leadership. Now it’s time for the rest of the midfielders to fill that void.”

Roldan also highlighted the competitiveness in the midfield, mentioning players like Weston McKennie, Tanner Tessmann, Sebastian Berhalter, Aidan Morris, and Johnny Cardoso.

“The competition is very high. It’s a great opportunity for all of us to test ourselves against very good competition,” added Roldan.

The current camp is the USMNT’s last gathering before the World Cup squad is announced in May. Roldan believes that the coach’s philosophy, which doesn’t guarantee a spot on the roster, will increase the pressure.

“These friendlies are not friendlies. We are playing against important European countries with a long history in the sport. This is our opportunity to show what we are capable of and who we can compete against,” stated Roldan.

Roldan, with experience in the 2022 World Cup, emphasized the importance of experience in the team, especially given the high expectations. He highlighted the need for players who can guide the team in moments of pressure. Roldan also spoke about the competition with newer players in the group, such as Villarreal defender Alex Freeman, and said that his ability as a complete player firmly places him in the fight for a place in the World Cup team.

“He brings a lot to the team, and I’m excited for him. I hope he continues to grow at Villarreal. But, again, it will be difficult for him to see the field [in LaLiga],” Roldan said about Freeman.

Freeman, for his part, has sought Roldan’s guidance since he joined MLS with Orlando City and began playing with the national team. The USMNT will begin its participation in the World Cup in Group D on June 12 against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
