Jess Fishlock gives Seattle Reign the victory after the match suspension

In a match marked by suspension and a medical emergency, the Seattle Reign achieved a crucial victory against Racing Louisville with a score of 1-0. The decisive goal came from Jess Fishlock in the 90th minute, sealing a match that resumed on Tuesday after being interrupted on Sunday due to an incident on the field. Racing Louisville midfielder Savannah DeMelo collapsed in the first half of the match, which necessitated her transport by ambulance. Following the incident, it was decided to postpone the remainder of the match. The second half of the match was played without a crowd at Seattle’s Lumen Field. Players from both teams wore purple armbands in honor of DeMelo. Fishlock, who came on as a substitute, scored her fifth goal of the season, number 47 in her regular season career, after getting past two defenders. This victory breaks a five-game winless streak for the Reign, who hadn’t celebrated a win since August 1 against Angel City. Both teams were in playoff positions in the NWSL table, but they were coming off losses. Louisville (7-8-5) fell 2-1 at home to the Portland Thorns, ending a four-game unbeaten streak. The Seattle (8-6-6) arrived after losing 2-0 as a visitor against the Washington Spirit. DeMelo remained hospitalized in Seattle, accompanied by her family. She was conscious and undergoing tests to determine the cause of her collapse.

“I am very grateful to all our medical staff for their quick response. They have been with me every step of the way,” DeMelo said in a statement released by the team on Monday. “The support of everyone has meant so much to me, and I am excited to cheer on the girls this week.”

In March, 27-year-old DeMelo had already left a game due to dizziness and chest tightness, being carried off on a stretcher. In May, she revealed that she suffers from Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism.
