Álvaro Carreras Strengthens Real Madrid’s Defense

Real Madrid has announced the incorporation of left-back Álvaro Carreras, coming from Benfica. The signing was finalized this Monday, marking a new defensive reinforcement for the team. Carreras, 22 years old, spent three years in Madrid’s youth academy before joining Manchester United in 2020. The defender becomes the club’s most recent defensive acquisition. The club had already confirmed the arrival of center-back Dean Huijsen and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, as part of the renewal of the defensive line for this summer’s Club World Cup.
Álvaro Carreras has been Madrid’s preferred candidate to reinforce the left-back position, a position in which neither Ferland Mendy, who has suffered frequent injuries, nor Fran García managed to convince last season. Carreras was a teammate of Raúl Asencio, another young talent from Madrid, during his time in the club’s youth academy, before choosing to join United. After four years in Manchester, including loan spells at Preston North End and Granada, he joined Benfica initially on loan, with an option to buy. The Spanish under-21 international had an outstanding 2024-25 season, with 32 appearances in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, as well as playing 10 matches in the Champions League.
