Liverpool has reached an agreement to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s talented attacking midfielder, Florian Wirtz, in a transfer that could set a new record in British football, reaching £116 million (136 million euros), according to sources close to the club.
The Anfield team had seen two offers for the player rejected, which were initially below Leverkusen’s expectations, who were asking for £126 million. Finally, an initial payment of £100 million was agreed, with the possibility of adding up to £16 million in bonuses.
According to the information provided, if all additional clauses are met, Wirtz’s transfer would surpass that of Moisés Caicedo, who joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2023.
Florian Wirtz, recognized as one of the best offensive midfielders, will become the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history, surpassing the 85 million pounds sterling paid for Darwin Núñez in 2022.
Liverpool managed to overcome strong competition from clubs such as Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid for the signing of the 22-year-old player. The club’s directors hope that Wirtz will have a similar impact to that of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, who arrived in 2018.
This would be the second signing of the summer for Liverpool, after the arrival of Jeremie Frimpong, Wirtz’s former teammate at Leverkusen. In addition, Arne Slot’s team is also interested in Bournemouth’s left-back, Milos Kerkez.
