Ernst Tanner, Sporting Director of the Philadelphia Union, on Administrative Leave Due to MLS Investigation
Philadelphia Union announced this Wednesday that its sporting director, Ernst Tanner, has been placed on administrative leave. Major League Soccer (MLS) has decided to reopen an investigation into allegations of inappropriate workplace behavior. According to a recent report, Tanner allegedly made racist comments directed at black players, coaches, and referees. In addition, he is accused of using sexist and homophobic language in the workplace. These accusations were presented to the league through a complaint from the MLS Players Association.MLS had previously concluded an investigation into the allegations, but closed the case after being unable to verify the claims. Following the publication of the report, the league announced the reopening of the investigation to further analyze the allegations. The league has stated that, “given the nature of the accusations, Mr. Tanner has been required to participate in a structured corrective program focused on professional conduct in the workplace”. Tanner joined the Union as sporting director in 2018 and signed a contract extension in 2021.“The Philadelphia Union takes all allegations of misconduct very seriously and is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone associated with our club. Discrimination, harassment, or abusive conduct of any kind has no place here, and all staff must complete annual sensitivity training,” the club stated in a statement.
