Philadelphia Union Crowned with the 2025 MLS Supporters’ Shield

The Philadelphia Union secured the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supporters’ Shield with a game to spare, after defeating New York City FC with a score of 1-0 on Saturday night at Subaru Park. The Philadelphia team accumulates 66 points in 33 matches, an advantage that no other contending team, including Inter Miami, last year’s winner, can reach in the remaining matches. The Union came into the match knowing that a win would secure them the Shield as the best team in the regular season. Other teams in competition were FC Cincinnati, the Vancouver Whitecaps, and LAFC. Danish forward Mikael Uhre calmed the nerves by scoring a deflected goal five minutes before halftime. Tension resurfaced in the final minutes when Máximo Carrizo appeared to have tied the game for NYCFC, but the assistant referee disallowed the goal for offside. Seconds later, the final whistle unleashed the celebrations.

The Philadelphia Union lifts the MLS Supporters’ Shield for the second time. The Union secured their first trophy under the direction of coach Bradley Carnell, who joined the team in January before the 2025 MLS season. Carnell has guided Philadelphia to a 20-7-6 record, leading the Eastern Conference table and securing home-field advantage in the playoffs.

“I always expect a lot, because I have high standards, these players have high standards. It’s a winning team, and it just needed to be rediscovered, to polish the basics a bit.”

The victory in the 2025 Supporters’ Shield also guarantees Philadelphia Union a place in the next edition of the Concacaf Champions Cup, joining Inter Miami, Seattle Sounders, LA Galaxy, Nashville SC and the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Union won the Supporters’ Shield in 2020, after finishing the season with a record of 14-4-5, achieving the first trophy for the club.
