Nico Williams has renewed his contract with Athletic Club.
Winger Nico Williams has secured his continuity with Athletic Club, signing a new contract that will bind him to the club until the year 2035. This decision puts an end to the speculation about his possible transfer to Barcelona, a team that had shown a strong interest in signing him this summer.
Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, had recently expressed Williams’ desire to join the Catalan club. President Joan Laporta had even stated the club’s willingness to pay the player’s release clause, estimated at 58 million euros (68.3 million dollars).
However, in an unexpected turn of events, Athletic Club announced on Friday an agreement for Williams’ renewal. The player’s new release clause has been increased “by more than 50%”.
