Morocco Crowned U-20 World Champion After Defeating Argentina

Morocco culminated a historic participation in Chile on Sunday night, defeating Argentina 2-0 and lifting the trophy at the U-20 World Cup. This result represents Morocco’s first victory in a World Cup of any category in the country’s history. Yassir Zabiri, a player for FC Famalicao in the Portuguese first division, scored two goals in the first half to give Morocco a 2-0 lead at halftime, a score that would be enough to secure the victory for the African nation. Morocco reached the final after defeating South Korea, the United States, and France in the elimination rounds, before defeating Argentina to crown an impressive performance. It became the first African nation to win the U-20 title since Ghana in 2009. This was Argentina’s first defeat in the tournament, which was seeking its seventh title. Argentina reached the final despite the absence of their two best players in this age group: Claudio Echeverri from Bayer Leverkusen and Franco Mastantuono from Real Madrid. Argentina’s absolute selection has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup in North America, after reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 edition in Qatar, where they lost against France. The absolute Argentina team is the current world champion and is also qualified for next summer’s tournament.
