Attention soccer fanatics! Lionel Messi has extended his stay at Inter Miami until the end of the 2028 MLS season, the team announced. The Argentine star, who arrived at the club in July 2023 with a two-and-a-half-year contract, has signed an extension that ensures his presence on the team for several more years. The official announcement was made with a video showing Messi signing the contract in what will be the field of the expected new Inter Miami stadium, the Miami Freedom Park.
Since his arrival in Miami, Messi has demonstrated his impact both on and off the field, leading the team to victory in the Leagues Cup 2023, and contributing to the team achieving the Supporters’ Shield 2024 and a record number of points in a single season of the league. Individually, Messi has been awarded the MLS Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 2024 and, recently, the Golden Boot 2025, after scoring 29 goals in 28 matches.I am very happy to stay here and continue with this project which, besides being a dream, has become a beautiful reality. Playing in this stadium, at the Miami Freedom Park, will be something very special.

The team prepares for the first match of the Round 1 playoff series against Nashville SC on Friday at Chase Stadium, as the club seeks the 2025 MLS Cup championship. Messi will continue playing for Inter Miami without his teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, who announced their retirement from soccer at the end of the 2025 MLS season. Busquets and Alba will compete with Inter Miami in the MLS playoffs, hoping to win one last trophy as players. Luis Suárez could also play his last matches with the club, as his contract expires at the end of the 2025 campaign. Although Suárez has not yet announced an extension with the club, co-owner Jorge Mas has indicated that the door remains open for the Uruguayan to stay at Inter Miami. When Lionel Messi chose MLS, it marked a turning point, not only for Inter Miami, but for our entire sport in North America. We feel very fortunate that Leo has chosen to stay and continue his career with Inter Miami.
