Mbappé: Lightning hat-trick and goalscoring exhibition in Champions

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé starred in a magical night in the Champions League, scoring the second fastest hat-trick in the history of the competition. His three goals in less than seven minutes were key to the team’s victory. Mbappé scored three goals in a span of 6 minutes and 42 seconds against Olympiacos on Wednesday, a performance only surpassed by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who achieved a hat-trick 30 seconds faster in 2022. The French striker, not satisfied with his hat-trick, added a fourth goal in the second half, sealing a stellar performance. The match, played in Greece, ended with a score of 4-3 in favor of Real Madrid.

It was very important to win again. We know that three games without winning is a lot for a team like us. It was a difficult match; it’s hard to win here. We started badly, losing the ball, we conceded the first goal, then we controlled it, scored goals, and in the second half it was a bit back and forth, we scored, [then] they did.

The player equalized the score in the 22nd minute, precisely defining from the edge of the area after an assist. Less than two minutes later, his second goal arrived, this time with a header after a cross from Arda Güler. The scoring streak continued with a third goal, taking advantage of a pass from Eduardo Camavinga. Mbappé added a fourth goal in the 59th minute.

I am very happy; scoring goals is always a pleasure. My teammates gave me good assists. I am lucky to play with these players. I always try to score, and sometimes it happens, but sometimes it doesn’t.

This was Mbappé’s second hat-trick in the Champions League this season, after scoring three goals against Kairat Almaty in September. In total, he has five hat-tricks in the competition, being the fourth player with the most in history.

Mbappé is in fifth place on the list of all-time top scorers in the Champions League and is only eight goals away from equaling Real Madrid legend Raúl González in fourth place. The forward arrived at Wednesday’s match without having scored in his previous three games with Real Madrid, during which the team had failed to win.
