Mascherano Would Prefer Rest for Messi and Alba in the All-Star Game

Inter Miami’s coach, Javier Mascherano, expressed his wish that Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba not participate in the MLS All-Star Game 2025. Mascherano argues that the players need rest in the middle of the regular season. Messi and Alba were selected for the All-Star Game to be played on July 23 against the best of the Liga MX in Austin. Alba will also participate in the Skills Challenge event the day before.

“The players are called up, I would like them to be able to rest, but that is not my decision,” commented Mascherano. “I know how important the All Star [Game] is, and as far as I know there is no decision from the club, everything is normal.”

Messi and Alba are expected to travel to Texas next week to participate in the event. Inter Miami will face the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night, in their third match in seven days. The team is stepping up the action in the MLS regular season after their participation in the Club World Cup, where Inter Miami advanced to the round of 16. Mascherano also expressed his concern about the number of matches, especially after goalkeeper Oscar Ustari’s injury during the match against FC Cincinnati.

“Regarding the injuries, I am not a specialist. It clearly worries me because, in the end, the team has been suffering many muscle injuries throughout the season,” said Mascherano.

“The intensity of the matches we’ve played, especially in the last month and a half, has been very, very high. But, well, we also have to find an explanation, improve and try to avoid it because obviously the team is gradually deteriorating with injuries.”

Lionel Messi’s MLS record streak of scoring two goals in a game ended at five after Miami lost to Cincinnati.
The coach also reported that Ustari suffered an injury, but the extent of his time out is not yet known. “Ustari suffered an injury, but I don’t know the extent of the time out. He will not play tomorrow, the goalkeeper will be Rocco [Rios Novo.]” Inter Miami will also soon begin preparations for its second summer tournament, starting against Atlas on July 30 for the 2025 edition of the Leagues Cup.
