Jesse Marsch Addresses Canadian Fans’ Concerns Ahead of Gold Cup

Canada’s coach, Jesse Marsch, has expressed his understanding of the possible reluctance of some Canadian fans to travel to the United States for the Concacaf Gold Cup. This situation is due, according to the coach, to the current political climate and the possible difficulties at the U.S. border.

“I could see apprehension from anyone who wants to travel to the United States in the current political climate,” Marsch commented in a virtual press conference.

Marsch, who was appointed as Canada’s coach in May 2024, after managing teams like Montreal, New York Red Bulls and Leeds United, emphasized the importance of each person making decisions based on their own circumstances and priorities.

The Gold Cup, which will be held from June 14 to July 6 at 14 venues, mostly located in the United States, represents a challenge for the Canadian fans. Canada, which shares the venue of the next World Cup with the United States and Mexico, will debut in the tournament on June 17 against Honduras in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Canadian team will play its next two matches in Houston, against Curaçao on June 21 and El Salvador on June 24.

“It would be a shame if we didn’t have the support of the fans that our team deserves, due to the political climate, especially if we could achieve a lot in this tournament and reach the final, which is our goal,” added Marsch.

Marsch, for his part, will not be able to coach from the sidelines the matches against Honduras and Curaçao due to a two-match suspension imposed by Concacaf.
