Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison suffered a knee injury that forced him to leave the field on a stretcher during the 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in the last match of the pre-season tour in Asia. Spurs coach Thomas Frank confirmed that the injury affected the same knee that sidelined him at the end of last season, describing it as a “serious” injury and a “brutal moment”.

Sometimes in life and in football things can be beautiful and brutal. That’s what we got today. It seems Madders has a bad injury and, on the other hand, incredible scenes for Son from his teammates and the respect of the Newcastle players.

The encounter almost overshadowed the emotional farewell match of striker Son Heung-Min. Son received a guard of honor before the match in his native South Korea, at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, and was moved to tears as he left the tunnel at the end of the match. The match came a day after he announced his intention to leave Tottenham this summer, in what he described as the “most difficult decision of his career”. Frank said after the match about his likely departure: “I think it’s very likely that it will be Sonny’s last match because he’s very close.”
