Luis Enrique Explains Incidents After PSG’s Defeat

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique gave statements after the final match of the Club World Cup, where his team was defeated by Chelsea. The match ended with tensions and an altercation on the field. The images suggest that Luis Enrique pushed João Pedro. The Spanish coach explained that his intention was to separate the players during the fight that broke out after the final whistle. The PSG’s 3-0 defeat was marred by the expulsion of João Neves from PSG in the 86th minute, after pulling the hair of Marc Cucurella, Chelsea player. This incident sparked a confrontation between both teams. Pedro, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Achraf Hakimi were also involved in the confrontation. Luis Enrique stated that, although the scenes were not ideal, his goal was to calm the situation.

“I have no problem expressing my feelings at the end of the match under a lot of pressure. It’s very stressful for all of us. It will be impossible to avoid it.

The coach added that he saw Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s coach, pushing others and that he tried to separate the players to prevent the situation from worsening. After the defeat, which prevented PSG from adding a world title to their Champions League crown, Luis Enrique insisted that his team are not “losers”.

“We are not losers, there are no losers. We are runners-up. A loser is someone who gives up. At this high sporting level there are no losers at all.”
