PSG Suffers Defeat Against Monaco in a Lackluster Match

The Paris Saint-Germain fell 1-0 to AS Monaco on Saturday, adding their second defeat of the season after 14 matchdays. This figure equals the total number of defeats from last season for the current Ligue 1 champion. Japanese forward Takumi Minamino scored midway through the second half for Monaco, taking advantage of an unusually imprecise performance by PSG.

“It’s difficult to maintain consistency when you make individual mistakes. It was our worst match of the season,” stated PSG coach Luis Enrique.

“They deserved it more than us. It was a bad night for us, a very bad night”.

The Portuguese midfielder Vitinha, who had achieved a brilliant hat-trick in the Champions League mid-week, was neutralized by Monaco’s hard-working midfield.

“It was difficult tonight. When you play a game full of imprecision and errors, it’s impossible to win. We have to accept the level we showed today,” added Luis Enrique.

Paris Saint-Germain's loss against Monaco is their third this season in all competitions, and the second for Luis Enrique's team in November after being beaten by Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

PSG was exposed to counterattacks, and Minamino did not forgive in the 69th minute, perfectly controlling a pass from Aleksandr Golovin from the left and sending the ball over Chevalier.

Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara was spared from being sent off early in the match after a dangerous tackle on goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. Camara violently impacted Chevalier’s right ankle just after he cleared the ball. Luis Enrique reacted to the incident, commenting: “Lucas Chevalier was very lucky today. I won’t say more because it’s not my job, but it’s incredible. He was very lucky.” Chevalier recovered and made a good one-handed save on Minamino’s volley later in the first half. Monaco defender Thilo Kehrer was sent off in the 80th minute after a video review following a push on a PSG player from behind. Former star midfielder Paul Pogba came on from the bench for Monaco in the final stages. The PSG maintained the first position in the standings after Olympique de Marseille missed the opportunity to surpass them in Ligue 1 on Saturday. A goal in stoppage time by Santiago Hidalgo gave Toulouse a 2-2 draw at the Velodrome. However, Lens could take first place on Sunday with a victory over Angers.
