Garth Lagerwey, Atlanta United President, in Cancer Treatment

The president and CEO of Atlanta United FC, Garth Lagerwey, is currently undergoing medical treatment for cancer and has decided to take an indefinite leave of absence. The news was confirmed by the club’s directors on Thursday, who also reported that the prognosis for full recovery is encouraging. A date for Lagerwey’s return has not been set.

Garth’s resilience and optimism are qualities that make him an exceptional leader, and I know he will maintain them in the coming days. I have full confidence in our leadership team and our players as we face this transition together.

Arthur M. Blank, Owner and Chairman
During Lagerwey’s absence, the daily operations of the business and football areas will be led by Chris Henderson, director of football; Skate Noftsinger, director of business; and Dimitrios Efstathiou, senior vice president of strategy. They will report regularly to Lagerwey and Rich McKay, CEO of AMB Sports and Entertainment. Lagerwey assumed the role of president and CEO of Atlanta United in November 2022. Previously, he spent eight years in Seattle, where he served as general manager and president of soccer for the Sounders.

I have made the difficult decision to step away from Atlanta United to focus on my cancer treatment. I want to express my deep gratitude to Arthur Blank for his support and for doing everything possible to make this process as painless as possible for me and my family. I couldn’t work for a better organization than AMBSE.

Lagerwey added that he fully trusts the leadership capabilities of Chris, Skate, and Dimitrios to run the club during his absence and looks forward to seeing the fans again at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
