Kansas City Current Sets Historic Record in the NWSL
The Kansas City Current has made history in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) by setting a new record for points in a season. The team achieved this feat on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Gotham FC at CPKC Stadium. With 62 points, the Current surpassed the 60-point mark set by the Orlando Pride last year. Even with two games remaining in the regular season, the Current leads the table with a 19-point lead over Washington, which is in second place. Bia Zaneratto scored with a header to give the home team the lead in the first half. Subsequently, Temwa Chawinga, the league’s top scorer, came off the bench to extend Current’s lead in the second half, reaching 15 goals for the season. The team has achieved 20 victories, surpassing the previous record set last year by Orlando and Washington Spirit. The Current have broken several other records this season, solidifying themselves as one of the most dominant teams in NWSL history. They secured the NWSL Shield faster than any other team in league history, clinching the trophy in 21 of the 26 matches of the season. Additionally, Kansas City set a new league record last month by keeping 870 consecutive minutes without conceding goals, which is equivalent to more than nine full matches. With the victory over Gotham, the Current has 17 consecutive matches without losing in the league. The Current goalkeeper, Lorena, also set an individual record on Saturday, recording her 14th shutout of the season, surpassing the record of 13 set by Anna Moorhouse of Orlando last season. Under the direction of former USWNT coach Vlatko Andonovski, the Current will be the first seed in the eight-team playoffs that will begin in November.I just want to be the best we can be and keep growing as a team. And if that means winning a championship, I would be more than happy to do so.
