Kane and Díaz: Instant Connection in Bayern Munich’s Victory

Harry Kane praised the “instant connection” he has with Luis Díaz, after the new signing assisted in two of his three goals in Bayern Munich’s resounding 6-0 victory over RB Leipzig. The English striker achieved his sixteenth hat-trick of his career in the league and the eighth with Bayern, marking the start of the Bundesliga title defense at the Allianz Arena. Díaz, who also scored in last week’s German Super Cup, continued his excellent start since his transfer for 75 million euros this summer, scoring a goal and assisting Kane twice in the second half.

“Lucho, solo han pasado unas semanas, pero siento que tenemos una conexión instantánea”, dijo Kane sobre Díaz. “Hoy me dio un par de asistencias y marcó muy bien su gol.”

Michael Olise, playing on the other end of Kane, also shone, scoring two goals in the first 45 minutes, at the start of the season without Thomas Müller.

“I’ve had a year with Michael and I feel the relationship is getting stronger,” Kane said. “The first part was outstanding, the goals he scored. It’s great for the lads, great for confidence. It’s a whole team that’s working and it was a great performance.”

Bayern dominated the match, with the exception of a 15-minute spell after the break, when Antonio Nusa came close to scoring for the visitors.

“We wanted to make a statement and that’s exactly what we did,” Kane said. “Leipzig is a good team, but we were on top in all areas today and were clinical when needed, so we can enjoy this.”

Olise opened the scoring in the 27th minute, and Diaz made the home fans celebrate again five minutes later by sending the ball into the back of the net on his Bundesliga debut, after a well-worked play involving Kane and Serge Gnabry. Gnabry gave the ball to Diaz with his heel. Olise scored his second goal two minutes later, assisted by Gnabry, who beat two Leipzig defenders to assist the French winger. Olise played in a central position for Bayern due to the absence of Jamal Musiala through injury. Leipzig improved after the break, no doubt after an energetic halftime talk with new coach Ole Werner, one of six coaches debuting in the Bundesliga with new clubs this weekend. Kane, who might have felt excluded before, scored Bayern’s fourth in the 64th minute, sending a defender flying after receiving the pass from Díaz and then sending the ball over Péter Gulácsi in Leipzig’s goal. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany made four changes at once in the 68th minute, but there was no respite for Leipzig. Kane scored his second goal in the 74th minute, again assisted by Diaz, and the England captain completed his first hat-trick of the season four minutes later.
