The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) confirmed this Thursday the contract extension of commissioner Jessica Berman for several years. The news was announced two days before match number 12 of the NWSL Championship.

It has been an honor for me to lead the NWSL during such an extraordinary period of growth. Every success we have achieved, from expansion to investment and the players’ experience, is the result of collaboration throughout the league. I am proud of what we have built and even more excited about the future. The best is yet to come.

Berman took office in 2022, at a critical moment following an investigation into systemic abuse in the league. When asked about the league’s priorities for the next three years, Berman noted:

We want people to come to our stadiums and expect the level of energy we have here every week in every regular season game in the 16 markets. We want those games to be exciting to watch on television and we want the best product on the field, ensuring that we have the best players, and that will support our vision of being the best league in the world.

The league’s executive committee led the final negotiations for the extension of Berman’s contract, which was expiring before the start of the 2026 season.

Carolyn Tisch Blodget, owner of Gotham FC and chair of the NWSL executive committee, stated:

Jessica’s leadership has been instrumental in transforming the NWSL into a global sports property. Her vision for sustainable growth, along with her ability to drive lasting momentum, has positioned the league for long-term success.

Under Berman’s leadership, the NWSL has experienced significant commercial growth, including a $240 million media rights deal, the league’s continued expansion, and the increase in team values. The league also ratified a new collective agreement last year and implemented reforms to improve player safety following a systemic abuse scandal. However, there have also been challenges related to player safety, such as the league’s response to the collapse of Savy King, defender for Angel City FC, on the field in May, and a dispute over whether to play a match in extreme heat conditions in Kansas City in August. There is concern about the league’s direction on the field and its ability to attract and retain top-tier talent. The NWSL lost USWNT stars Alyssa Thompson and Naomi Girma, who joined Chelsea earlier this year. Also, Trinity Rodman, forward for the Washington Spirit, could leave the league due to salary restrictions. A general manager commented:

There is a tremendous focus on the commercial aspect and less on the sporting aspect. If we want the commercial aspect to continue to excel, we need the best product on the field.
