Jess Carter Denounces Racial Abuse and Retires from Social Media

England defender Jess Carter has reported being the victim of racial abuse during the 2025 European Championship. Following these attacks, the player has decided to stay away from social media for the rest of the tournament. The news was confirmed through a statement in which Carter expressed her feelings. The soccer player has experienced a great deal of racial abuse since the beginning of the tournament.

“Since the beginning of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse. While I feel that every fan has the right to their opinion on performance and result, I do not agree nor do I think it is right to attack someone’s appearance or race. As a result of this, I will take a break from social media and let a team take care of it”.

The England national team, known as “The Lionesses”, has expressed its full support for Carter and announced that they will stop taking a knee before matches as a gesture against racism. The FA’s chief executive, Mark Bullingham, has stated that the federation has contacted the UK police to ensure that those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice. Carter, who has been a starter in England’s four matches at Euro 2025, and was a key player in Euro 2022 and the 2023 World Cup, has suffered racist insults on her social media platforms since the start of the tournament. In his statement, Carter also thanked the support of the true fans and expressed his hope that his testimony will serve to generate positive change. The team has decided to stand before the start of the semi-final match against Italy on Tuesday. “No one should have to endure such vile abuse, whether in football or in any area of life,” they stated. The FA is in contact with the social media platform where Carter was subjected to racist abuse and has referred the case to the police. “Our priority is Jess and to give her all the support she needs,” said Bullingham. “We strongly condemn those responsible for this disgusting racism.” The FA is working with the police to ensure that those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice.
