The Mexican soccer player Rodrigo Huescas will miss the rest of the season due to a long-term injury to his right knee, suffered while playing for FC Copenhagen. This news casts doubt on his participation in the World Cup. According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Danish club, Huescas underwent medical examinations after a fall and his early substitution during a UEFA Champions League match. The results confirmed the severity of the injury.
Huescas, 22 years old, is considered one of the most outstanding promises of Mexican soccer. Since his debut with the national team last summer, shortly before his move to Europe from Cruz Azul, Huescas established himself as a strong candidate for the right-back position in El Tri, and even provided an assist in Mexico’s recent 2-2 draw against South Korea. This means that Rodrigo will now undergo surgery and a long period of rehabilitation, and will be out for at least the rest of the season.

Without Huescas, Mexico will continue its preparation for the World Cup with friendly matches this month against Colombia on October 11 and Ecuador on October 14. The Mexican Federation has not yet announced the list of players called up for these two matches.Rodrigo has proven to be an exceptionally talented player who has become a key figure for FC Copenhagen and in the Superliga. He has shown continuous development and was on the verge of a major breakthrough in Europe. He was also looking forward to a home World Cup in Mexico next summer, if he had continued with his good performances.
